Zeichnung für Felix im Exil (Figuren Auge in Auge), 1994 / Holzkohle und Pastell auf Papier / 120 x 150 cm

Drawing for “Felix in Exile” (figures eye to eye), 1994 / charcoal and pastel on pape

It tells the story of Felix, who lives in exile in Paris, and Nandi, a land surveyor. The two come from different cultures, but they merge with each other as well as with their memories of their shared homeland, its eventful history, and its inscriptions in the landscape.

The gestural quality of drawing as a narrative form is echoed in the large-format paintings of the cycle “Die Krähe” (The Crow, 2011) by Johannes Heisig. They are based on poems by the British writer Ted Hughes and testify to the struggle with guilt and despair, as well as loneliness and togetherness, and raise the question of the meaning of human existence.

Various layering and processing techniques characterize the gestural paintings of Sabine Herrmann, which are interspersed with hints of graphic fragments. Figurative constellations, designed more as shadows than as bodies in large-format pictorial spaces, reflect the delicate relationship between individual identity (Identita), the space of imagination, and the tension between inner and outer realities.

Klaus Killisch's portraits of nameless, faceless, and timeless smokers, who seem to float in diffuse monochrome pictorial spaces in a schematic and color-reduced manner, function as silent witnesses or observers.
